Our Approach
Our pedagogy is grounded in the aggregate knowledge basis referred to as the “Science of Reading.” This growing body of interdisciplinary research draws upon findings from a variety of fields including neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, and education. In alignment with this evidence basis, we utilize a Structured Literacy approach that addresses all language components necessary for learning to read and write.
You may have heard of Orton Gillingham based programs. To avoid confusion, Structured Literacy is the umbrella term used by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) to describe all the programs that essentially teach reading the same way - Orton Gillingham, Wilson, IMSE, Barton, etc. Each of these programs is branded under a different company, but they share the same core principles research has proven to be effective for literacy instruction.
Moving from simple to more complex concepts, we follow a systematic and cumulative approach teaching all the foundational skills and strategies necessary for a beginning reader to master. This includes developing phonological awareness, letter sound awareness, knowledge of spelling patterns, fluency, and comprehension.
Using diagnostic teaching, every lesson is individualized to match the student’s readiness level and interests. Lessons build upon previously learned skills and strategies, constantly reinforcing prior knowledge and scaffolding support as new topics are introduced. Your child’s success is our top priority!
